Toronto - Days 0 and 1 - Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th February 2018:

Hello and welcome to my trip report for our visit to Toronto Very Happy

Paul and I both adore Canada - such a friendly, welcoming place to visit with genuinely the warmest of people we have ever met whilst travelling.  I have often thought of emigrating and transferring to the Canadian Police but would miss family too much.  We are lucky enough to have been twice before in 2008 and 2010 when we visited British Columbia area on escorted holidays.  So this time, we thought we would try Eastern Canada and when BA released their sales, Toronto was the choice! My mum equally loves Canada as some of her family emigrated when she was a child and seeing Niagara Falls as been a dream of hers for as long as I can remember.  So, we decided to see if her and my step-dad Brian wanted to join us and were delighted when they said yes.

I was chief planner and organiser Very Happy  Flights and hotel were an absolute bargain to the point my mum didn’t believe her when I told her the cost.  Booked to stay at Marriot City Centre which had good reviews and seemed central to a lot of the main attractions.  I pre-booked Thistle T5 hotel at Heathrow which we used last year when we went to Boston which cost £85 for the room, breakfast and car-parking.  I also pre-brought Toronto CityPass which gave us pre-paid access to the top tourist attractions and also booked a day trip to Niagara Falls.  Lastly, Paul and I brought tickets to see th basketball as our favorite team Boston Celtics just happened to be playing in Toronto whilst we were there.  So with all the planning done, just had to sit back and wait for the holiday to arrive........  Having something to look forward too in February really helps with the winter post Christmas blues.

Saturday 3rd February 2018 soon arrived Very Happy  We packed our suitcase and stupidly chose to share one case; the weight was literally on the 23kg which were allocated but thought we would be OK, in hindsight we should have had a case each.  We collected mum and Brian at 9.30, mum was giddy with excitement and told us she hadn’t slept the night before Laughing  We had decided to head to Windsor for the day - its our favorite place to visit when flying from Heathrow.  Thankfully the roads behaved themselves and we arrived about 11.15ish and parked up.  The weather was awful, it literally didn’t stop raining from the time we left home to arriving at The Thistle hotel.  We headed straight to Costa for a hot drink to warm us up and so I could check us in online.

We then had a wander round the city and looked in the shops (Paul brought yet more t-shirts; seriously he is addicted!). It really is a lovely place to spend a few hours.

Wet and cold we headed to the hotel about 2.30ish.  It was a short 20 minute drive and we got parked close to reception which was great as it was still raining!  We checked in and were allocated 2 rooms on the 2nd floor - weirdly the hotel doesn’t have a lift so Paul had to carry our heavy suitcase  Laughing We then met in the bar area and spent a lovely few hours just chilling, watching the 5 nations and discussing our upcoming trip.  We ate in the hotel restaurant which was lovely - good food and not too expensive at all. We then hit the sack with a scheduled alarm call of 6am for breakfast  Sleep

Travel day:  Sunday 4th February 2018.
6am soon came round and we headed to the restaurant for breakfast which was included in the price.  It was lovely, full hot and cold buffet which we all tucked in to.  Not bad for £10 per person - the views are worth it alone!

We bid farewell to the hotel about 8.15 and headed out the back to the pod transfer system which would take us to the airport.  Paul and I love these cute little pods - they cost £5 per person each way and take you to the terminal in about 5 minutes.

Check-in was open when we arrived so we dropped our bags and headed straight through security.  I checked my mums hand luggage again as last time we went to Canada (last time she went on a plane) she had a tape measure, a pair of nail scissors and a piece of fruit and malt loaf in her bag  Shocked  Laughing  Thankfull this time she had listened to my advice and only had a few essentials.  Security was nice and quick and we were soon relaxing airside.  We had a look round duty free - is it me or does it just not seem to have the savings that it used too?? Paul did get a bargain on some after-shave though.  We paid the compulsory visit to WHSmith for water and sweets and then settled with a coffee waiting for our gate to open.  I like T5 but the shops are out of my league price wise!

We made our way to the gate which soon filled up.  It was soon apparent it was going to be a very “ethically diverse” flight, we were surrounded by lots of Indians and Chinese.

The gate displayed the weather for our arrival.

Th flight took off about 20 minutes lase as the pilot told us a family had left their passports at home and they needed to remove the bags from the plane.  Paul and I couldn’t work out how their bags managed to get on the plane as they always check your passports before checking in bags at bag drop?  Flight was OK.  I was sat next to an old Indian man who literally coughed all the way to Toronto and not once did he put his hand over his mouth.  A few times I thought of saying something but didn’t, I just got closer and closer to Paul! Food was good - BA recently changed their menu and it was some of the nicer airplane food we have had.  I had pasta and Paul had chicken both which were nice.  The show stopper was the desserts though - Gu Salted Caramel pots! Paul didn’t want his so I greedily ate his too  Very Happy  Watched 3 films - Billboards Outside Missouri (Oscar nominated film currently also showing at cinema), Battle of the Sexes (film about Billy-Jean King playing a tennis match against Bobby Riggs in the 1970s) and Kingsman;Golden Circle.  All were excellent.  Before I knew it we were starting our descent in to Toronto.

Immigration was great, much better than Orlando  Laughing We all were through in about 20mins and our bags were waiting for us.  We exited the terminal and got a taxi to our hotel which took abut 20mins and cost CAD$55 which wasn’t bad.  We arrived at the hotel at about 4pm local time.  Checked in and were given rooms in the 9th floor of the hotel which gave us lovely views.  The rooms were lovely and spacious.

We freshened up and headed out to get our bearings and stretch our legs a little.  It was blooming freezing but none of us minded   Very Happy  The hotel is attached to The Rogers Centre which is home to the Toronto Blue Jays baseball team and right next door to the CN tower which proved a great help when navigating our way around.  We walked for about 30 minutes taking in the fresh, clean Canadian air.  We only ventured a few blocks as it was starting to get dark and we were all getting hungry.  We found the closest Tim Hortons which is a Canadian national treasure where they sell officially the best coffee and donuts.  Paul loves it in there and would have been happy if we'd left him there and collected him at the end of the holiday  Laughing

We headed back to the hotel and grabbed a small bar meal each and a couple of Canadian beers before tiredness got the better of us.  Happy to have arrived back in Canada we went to bed dreaming of adventures to come.....

wow what a lovely start to your adventures in Canada, I'm impressed with the price you paid for the hotel and parking at Heathrow. And your hotel in Canada looks fab, I love the cold crisp weather but hate the wind and rain, do you have snow? I went to Ottawa in March one year and we had beautiful sunny weather for the first few days then woke up to 3ft of snow, I was so impressed with how quickly the roads were clear and flights all took off on time, here in UK the country would have ground to a halt. Looking forward to the next instalment.

We had lots of snow which you will see in the next few reports. We were lucky with the weather, no rain, just snow or crisp sunny days. You are right about how they deal with it all, the roads were cleared, paths made safe and trains were all running. The UK is rubbish when it comes to weather! Did you like Ottawa? We are already planning next February’s trip and thinking of visiting there, Montreal or Seattle.

Great start to your trip report Very Happy
The hotel was an absolute bargain, great find.
Oh wow the little pods taking you to the airport look so cool, but how on earth did you manage with just the one case Shocked

Your hotel looks lovely, love the tiles in the bathroom.
This is somewhere we've been talking about going next year. The girls came up with the idea, and Niagra falls is top of the list, so I will be eagerly awaiting the next instalment Very Happy

great report thank you. We will be flying from Heathrow in Sept to Chicago, so will look at your hotel. Is there public transport to Windsor from heathrow?. Always wanted to go so we could go on an earlier flight from the IOM and have the day in Windsor, then fly out the next day.

Next holiday might be Canada.

Hi Carole. I’m pretty sure there would be either bus or train. The train station is right in the middle of Windsor. It’s a great place to visit.
